Fun Day 2005--Explore SUComes to Campus September 17
class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---Learning and fun go hand-in-hand at Salisbury University during Fun Day 2005 – Explore SU, inaugurating the University’s 80th anniversary celebration Saturday, September 17.
class=""MsoNormal"">From 11 a.m.-3 p.m., this family festival and celebration of learning features everything from glass blowing to chemistry professors making ice cream—with liquid nitrogen!
class=""MsoNormal"">“We have activities everyone can enjoy, from the SU Police speed pitch to storytelling to musical performances,” said Derek Tennant, Fun Day coordinator.
class=""MsoNormal"">Want to see Dad unleash his inner desire to become a hip-hop dancer? The SU Dance Company hosts four 30-minute dance and movement classes, including ballet, jazz, hip-hop and yoga. For those more scientifically inclined, the SU Nursing Department allows families a look at what it takes to train in the medical field with SimMan, a robotic patient simulator.
class=""MsoNormal"">The festival is centered on the “Fun Day Green”—the expanse of lawn between Maggs Physical Activities Center, Henson Science Hall, Caruthers Hall and the Rt. 13 parking lot. In between will be inflatables such as a Moon Bounce and Obstacle Course for youngsters, arts and crafts such as duck carving with child-safe tools sponsored by the Ward Museum, games and free give-aways, candy and SU tattoos, a chance to be photographed with SU’s Sammy the Sea Gull, 5-cent philosophical advice (? la Peanuts) from the Philosophy Department and much more!
class=""MsoNormal"">A hayride provides tours of the campus and drop people off at Fulton Hall, Blackwell Library and other stops where families may enjoy more crafts, exhibits, demonstrations such as glass blowing, computer fun (make a personalized map of your house at 20,000 feet above the Earth) and real robots, courtesy of NASA. Bring sneakers so you can play basketball and field hockey with the “big kids” during sports clinics.
class=""MsoNormal"">Off-campus groups also participate. The Salisbury Zoo brings its Zoo-2-U Program, allowing youngsters and brave-of-heart of all ages to interact with owls, snakes and other animals, courtesy of the SU Student Government Association (SGA). Peninsula Regional Medical Center and the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office share their expertise with the community, and Delmarva Broadcasting provides treats and tunes with its free ice cream truck, a returning favorite from last year.
class=""MsoNormal"">“This is a celebration of SU and the community,” said SGA President Julius Jones. “We want people to come out and enjoy what the University has to offer and encourage them to participate.”
class=""MsoNormal"">Music from near and far accompanies festivities with local performers including Diana Wagner and faculty band Pugsly. West Africa meets the Eastern Shore with the Tub?m Tub?m African dance, drum and storytelling team Kofi Dennis and Kwanne Ansah-Brrew of Anansegromma. The native Ghanaians and teachers at the Wolf Trap Institute for the Performing Arts perform at noon and 1 p.m. All events are free and the public is invited.
