Fulton Hall Gallery Exhibits Paintings by Kent English

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury State University’s Fulton Hall Gallery features "Kent English Paintings" from Friday, November 17, through Friday, December 15, with an opening reception on November 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the Gallery.

Described as a reflection of trends in latter 20th century art, English’s works are large paintings dealing with dense surfaces with color playing a central supportive role carrying figurative elements that are repeated from one painting to the next creating a personal communications system that is still in the process of being developed by the artist.

A local businessman and painter, English has been involved in art throughout his life. He pursued his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University where he became actively involved with making art and studied both commercial art and painting.

Following the completion of his B.F.A. he enrolled in the M.F.A. program at the University of North Carolina where many 20th century art movements and trends began to influence his work and which still play a role in his painting today.

After completion of his M.F.A. he was accepted and attended the Triangle Artist’s Workshop where he studied with Toni Caro the sculptor. During this period castings of local simple objects, such as shells, began to appear in his works.

For 10 years English concentrated on photography but ultimately returned to painting. He describes his works as abstract but said, "you really can’t paint an object without it being an image."

Hours for the Fulton Hall Gallery are Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, noon-4 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited.
