Field Hockey Co-Captain Earns $7,500 NCAA Scholarship

SALISBURY, MD---Erin Budd, 21, of Delmar, DE, a senior at Salisbury University, is one of only 28 female student athletes across the country receiving a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA for outstanding performance in fall sports. She is the first student athlete in SU field hockey to win this prestigious scholarship.  As co-captain, Budd led SU’s field hockey team to Division III championship titles in 2003 and 2004. “It’s a great honor for Erin and a great honor for the University,” said Field Hockey Coach Dawn Chamberlin. “She’s really worked hard and done a great job bringing the team up to the next level.” Budd has had an outstanding college career on the playing field and in the classroom.   She finished the 2004 field hockey season with 53 points, including 18 goals and 17 assists. She led the Sea Gulls with seven game-winning goals and ended the season with a .168 shot percentage. She was named to the NCAA’s 2004 National Field Hockey Championship All-Tournament Team and 16-player All-America first team. Throughout her athletics career she has maintained a 3.73 GPA and is a Dean’s List student.  A health education major, she plans to pursue graduate study at SU. In addition to Salisbury, the 28 scholarship winners represented such campuses as the University of Southern California, University of Pennsylvania, University of Delaware, Duke, Stanford and the University of Texas at Austin. Budd said the scholarship would help her continue her education: “To be selected out of all those people and to know I’ll be able to attend graduate school is great. It’s a real honor.” To qualify for the scholarship Budd needed to perform with distinction in athletics, maintain a high scholastic average, and demonstrate exemplary behavior both on and off the playing field. She will enter the Master of Education program this fall to pursue a career in health education.  The daughter of Greg and Linda Budd, she is a 2001 graduate of Delmar High School.
