Ference Attends Library Conference in Estonia 

SALISBURY, MD--Dr. Gregory C. Ference, professor of history in the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts at Salisbury State University, recently attended the two-day V International Slavic Librarians’ Conference, "Libraries in Open Society," at the newly constructed National Library of Estonia in Tallinn.

At the conference, which was attended by participants from 15 countries, Ference spoke on the panel "Preserving Slavic Collections for Future Generations," along with five other representatives from the University of Hawaii, Indiana University, University of Kansas, the National Library of the Czech Republic and the National Library of Russia.

The panel examined ways to preserve materials printed on highly acidic papers that cause rapid disintegration. Solutions discussed by the panel were digitalization, archival photocopying and microfilming.

During the conference participants were welcomed by members of the Estonian parliament, attended a reception at the Finnish embassy in Tallinn and enjoyed closing ceremonies at the Estonian Open-Air museum, a living museum that recreates live in Estonia at the turn of the 20th century.
