Fall Convocation September 8: Henson Faculty Member
Dr. Linda Bush Addresses Campus Community

SALISBURY, MD--Salisbury State University officially inaugurates the academic year with its Fall Convocation on Tuesday, September 8, at 3:30 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium. The colorful ceremony with a procession of professors in full academic regalia and the University mace and flag to music by the Wind Ensemble is a tradition dating back to the beginnings of the University.

Following a welcome by President William C. Merwin and recognition of student scholars, a featured speaker sets the tone for the academic year in a major address to the campus community. This years spotlight is on a younger faculty member, Dr. Linda Bush, an assistant professor in the Chemistry Department. Bush, who is not revealing the title of her speech, is promising something a little different. Since 1997 she has participated in Project Kaleidoscope, a national organization of representatives from all sectors of higher education working toward strengthening and reforming science education at the undergraduate level.

At a Project Kaleidoscope Leadership Institute this summer Bush said she learned a lot about team building, the value of introspection, self-understanding and motivation, and the importance of every member of a team or organization playing her own special role.

My short talk will focus on some of these themes, especially the value of diversity, she said.

Bush, who earned her bachelors from Bryn Mawr College and doctorate from Yale, was surprised when Interim Provost Don Cathcart asked her to be convocation speaker. Frankly, I thought he was joking, she said.

Cathcart praised Bush for her research and maintaining contacts with colleagues and mentors at Yale while doing a fantastic job in the classroom at SSU.

She is a campus leader in finding effective ways to integrate technology into her teaching and encouraging her students to engage in activities in undergraduate research.

As a member of Project Kaleidoscope, a national organization of talented, creative young scientists, she will be in the forefront of determining what science education should be in the 21st century.

I dont anticipate this will be a typical convocation speech, added Cathcart. Im very curious about what Dr. Bush has in store for us.

The public is cordially invited to attend the Convocation.
