Eric Cheezum Receives Pi Gamma Mu Scholarship

SALISBURY, MD---Eric Cheezum, a history major from Preston, MD, and a December 1999 graduate, was recently notified that he is a recipient of one of 10 scholarships given annually by Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society of the Social Sciences. Cheezum, the 1999-2000 president of SSU's Maryland Gamma Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, has attended and presented scholarly papers at regional and international conventions. Since December, Cheezum has taken graduate history classes at SSU, and has been accepted into the graduate history program at the University of South Carolina this fall 2000.

The Maryland Gamma Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu was chartered at Salisbury State in 1983 and Cheezum is SSU's fourth undergraduate student to receive this prestigious award. Previous scholarship recipients were Nate Graff, Suzanne Pfuhl and Kay Payne. Lena Kasi Toulemait, a graduate of Pace University, presently enrolled in the history graduate program at SSU, is also a scholarship recipient.

"To receive the award is indeed a honor," said Dr. Clara Small, advisor at SSU, "because the recipients are in competition with other Pi Gamma Mu members at prestigious international colleges and universities."

The advisors for the Maryland Gamma Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu for the 1999-2000 school term are Dr. Richard Bowler, Sylvia Bradley, Dr. Bart Talbert and Small. Small also serves as chancellor of the North Eastern Region of Pi Gamma Mu.
