ESIAT Symposium Includes 'A Sense of Wonder' Performance

class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Foundation and Psychology Department co-sponsor the Eastern Shore Institute for the Advancement of Thinking’s (ESIAT) 2005 Symposium, “Environment Across the Curriculum,” featuring the play A Sense of Wonder starring Kaiulani Lee, 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 29, in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College.

class=""MsoNormal"">The play focuses on the life of Rachel Carson, credited as being one of the great naturalist thinkers of the 20th century. A writer, scientist and ecologist, Carson began the movement against the long term effects of pesticide misuse in the late 1950s. She lobbied Congress for new policies to protect human health and the environment. Carson is arguably responsible for the inception of the Environmental Protection Agency.

class=""MsoNormal"">Lee, who plays Carson, has appeared in films and television shows including A Civil Action and Law and Order.

class=""MsoNormal"">This year’s focus is on naturalist intelligence and methods to foster such thinking in the classroom. Naturalist intelligence is described as a person’s ability to identify and classify patterns in nature and ultimately understand how those patterns interact and impact the environment. The symposium features representatives from organizations offering environmental education programs.

class=""MsoNormal"">The symposium is 3:30-8 p.m. Tickets for the play are $15 and include a picnic dinner. Registration deadline is March 18. For more information call Debra Truitt at 410-543-6370. ESIAT, established in 1994, is a consortium of public and private schools and organizations with the mission of advancing education for thinking in the Lower Eastern Shore. Other sponsors include: SU, the Salisbury School, Somerset County Public Schools, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Wicomico County Public Schools, Worcester Preparatory School, Worcester County Public Schools and Wor-Wic.
