Day Without Violence Activities Planned for April 3-4

SALISBURY, MD---Tom Boland, a tireless worker for the homeless in the Boston area, discusses, "The Violence of Poverty and the Poverty of Affluence," on Monday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Caruthers Hall Auditorium at Salisbury State University. The talk, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Center for Conflict Resolution, Inc.

Boland is a pacifist anti-poverty activist who spent two years homeless and has worked with homeless people in and near Boston since 1981. He is founder of a homeless-run day center, open since 1991, where he hosts a Homeless People's Network e- mail discussion list which began in 1997.

He holds a bachelor's degree (1975) from the College of Social and Behavioral Science at the University of South Florida.

On Tuesday, April 4, (the anniversary of Martin Luther's King's death) "The Day without Violence" is in SSU's Red Square from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. informing participants through pamphlets and activities on the many forms of violence. Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected for the Maryland Foodbank in the community.

At 6 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of SSU's Guerrieri University Center, Ira Shore speaks on "Back from the Brink," a nationwide campaign to take nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert.

Following Shore's presentation a candlelight vigil with the Folk Heroes leading the music, recommitting those in attendance to Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision and call for a new culture of nonviolence and justice.
