'Colorful China' Returns to SU Wednesday, November 16

Colorful ChinaSALISBURY, MD---The splendor of China’s diverse nationalities returns to Salisbury University with a new show.

“Colorful China: A Celebration of China’s Ethnic Communities” presents high-spirited song and elaborately costumed dance 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

The program is derived from research, collection and preservation of the country’s 56 ethnic groups by the Chinese National Museum of Ethnology, represented by 48 performers.

The dance and costumes of bright colors, unique and sophisticated styles, and deep cultural meanings illustrate the diversity of Chinese culture. The presentation is recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as “oral and intangible cultural heritage in the world.”

The troupe has performed at venues throughout Asia and Europe. Through their work, members hope to boost cultural communication and understanding between the United States and China, said June Krell-Salgado, SU cultural affairs director.

Complementing the performance, SU screens the film Costumes of the Minorities of China 7 p.m. Mondays, November 7 and 14, in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall.

Sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs, the Chinese National Museum of Ethnology, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and World Artists Experiences, Inc., admission is free and the public is invited.
