Campbell Speaks on 'Civil War Medicine' Monday, December 5

Civil War AccessoriesSALISBURY, MD---The Civil War was a heart-wrenching time for the United States — but a boon for medical science.

Dr. William Campbell of Salisbury University’s Nursing Department speaks on “Civil War Medicine and its Impact on Healthcare Today” 7 p.m. Monday, December 5, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

Campbell presents an overview of healthcare, pre-1861; the demands, resources, research and leadership that forced change during the war; and what happened following its end in 1865, especially in nursing. His presentation examines medical, surgical, nursing and pharmaceutical changes and how they relate to medicine today, with an emphasis on the past.

In recognition of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, Campbell speaks in uniform, and exhibits other uniforms and original artifacts from the war.

Sponsored by SU’s Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture, admission is free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6312 or visit the SU Web site at
