SU Celebrates Homecoming and Family Weekend October 5-8

Homecoming Weekend Leaf LogoSALISBURY, MD---From reunions to fun activities for parents and students, Salisbury University’s 2017 Homecoming and Family Weekend is packed with excitement.

Events begin Thursday, October 5, with the annual faculty emeriti and retired staff luncheon from noon-2 p.m. in the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons Assembly Hall. (Admission to the luncheon is by invitation only.)

Activities continue with the Maroon & Gold Club’s annual golf tournament, co-sponsored by Chick-fil-A, at 10 a.m. Friday, October 6, at Nutters Crossing Golf Course. Entry fee is $75 per player, $280 per team. Pre-registration is required.

The Residence Hall Association’s annual powder puff football game is 2 p.m. that day on Holloway Hall Lawn. From 4:30-7:30 p.m., University Dining Services presents a “Taste of the Chesapeake” dinner, featuring the band Such Fools, in the Commons. Cost is $13.50, $12.25 for alumni, $8.15 for children ages 5 and under.

That evening, the SU Athletics Hall of Fame inducts four members of the Class of 2007 during its annual banquet at 6 p.m. in the GAC Assembly Hall. They are: Jason Ewing (baseball), Lacey Lord (softball), Michael Steinen (men’s soccer) and Byron Westbrook (football). Admission is $35, $30 for past inductees. Pre-registration is required.

Saturday events begin with an open house at the Alumni House and Miller Alumni Garden from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. A luncheon for alumni graduating prior to 1973 is 11 a.m. in the Worcester Room of the Commons. The class of 1967 is honored on its 50th anniversary. Admission is $20, free for Class of ’67 members, and pre-registration is required. The classes of 1932, 1937, 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957, 1962 and 1972 will be recognized, as well.

Activities continue at 11 a.m. with the SU Alumni Association’s annual pre-game barbecue in the field adjacent to the Sea Gull Stadium. This serves as a reunion for the classes of 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2012. The meal includes barbecue with all the sides, sodas and beer, served until halftime.  

Music is by Beauty for Ashes; children’s games and activities are available. Entrance to the tent area is free to everyone. Pre-registration is $10, $5 for children 10 and under. Day-of registration is $15.

Sea Gull Football hosts Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m. Admission is $7; $5 for alumni, seniors and non-SU students; $3 for children 5-12; free for children under 5. SU ID holders receive one ticket free. The game includes a performance by the SU Pep Band, directed by Dr. Charles Smith Jr.

Tailgating begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of South Division and Avery streets. Entrance to the tailgate area is $10 per vehicle. For more information, including restrictions on what can be brought into the tailgate area, visit www.salisbury.edu/gameday.

A family ice cream social follows the game from 3-5 p.m. at Sammy's Angle. The Multicultural Student Services Office hosts a post-game alumni jazz social in the GAC Assembly Hall from 4-6 p.m., featuring Gigi Allen.

New to Homecoming this year is a hot rod and antique car show from 2:30-5 p.m. Saturday in the Perdue Hall parking lot. Entry is free, but space is limited. Pre-registration is recommended.

Homecoming and Family Weekend events end with a jazz brunch from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, October 8, in the Commons. Cost is $11.66, $10.49 for alumni, $5.94 for children ages 5 and under.

The week also includes student-centered events such as a pep rally and step show hosted by recognized student organizations.

•    6 p.m. – Homecoming and Family Weekend beer- and wine-pairing dinner, Evolution Craft Brewing Co. Public House, 201 E. Vine St. ($45 per person)

•    6 p.m. – Modern Languages Department alumni reunion, location TBD

•    7:30 p.m. – Faculty and alumni recital, Holloway Hall, Great Hall

Saturday, October 7

•    10 a.m. – Campus walking tour, Alumni House

•    11 a.m. – History Department reunion, Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons, Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture

•    11 a.m. – Biology meet and greet, SU Alumni Association pre-game barbecue, Sea Gull Stadium

•    11 a.m. – Student Government Association reunion, SU Alumni Association pre-game barbecue, Sea Gull Stadium


•    2 p.m. – Men’s and women’s soccer vs. Penn State-Harrisburg, Sea Gull Soccer Stadium

•    3 p.m. – Volleyball vs. University of Mary Washington, Maggs Physical Activities Center

•    3 p.m. – Geography Department open house and SU Geography Alumni Alliance BBQ, Eastern Shore Regional GIS Center

•    3 p.m. – Algonquin New Student Experience 35th anniversary reunion, Guerrieri Student Union, Fireside Lounge

•    3:30-5:30 p.m. – Acadia New Student Experience reunion, Commons, Montgomery Room

•    5-8 p.m. – Lambda Society Rainbow Reunion, Commons, Worcester Room (pre-registration required, $15, $7.50 children 12 and under)

•    6-8 p.m. – Class of 1992 reunion, Adam’s Taphouse Grill, 219 N. Fruitland Blvd., Fruitland ($5, including one beverage)

•    6-8 p.m. – Class of 1997 reunion, Specific Gravity, 105 E. College Ave. ($5, including one beverage)

Sunday, October 8

•    Noon – Field hockey vs. Frostburg State University, Sea Gull Stadium

SU Libraries hosts its annual book sale throughout Homecoming and Family Weekend at the Guerrieri Academic Commons. SU’s Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art presents free carving demonstrations from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Sunday.
