Henson School Receives Minority Recruitment Grant†

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury State University’s Henson School of Science and Technology recently received a $20,000 grant from the University System of Maryland to increase and enhance recruitment and retention of minority persons into the fields of engineering, computer science, physics and technology through the collaborative efforts of faculty at SSU and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

The goal of the program is to develop easily accessible learning systems for minority students who may have had limited exposure to high-end information technology during their high school years.

“Access and use of laboratory instruments from a remote location allows undergraduate students to perform actual experiments at any time and from any location and to repeat the process until the concept and the experiment are well understood,” said Dr. Asif Shakur, chair of the Department of Physics at SSU.

The program is designed to overcome some of the fundamental problems experienced by minority students including lack of experience with computer technology and Web-based learning systems.
