Faculty Team Attends Head Start Leadership Institute †

SALISBURY, MD--Dr. Debra Thatcher, associate professor of education, and Dr. Starlin Weaver, assistant professor of education, both of Salisbury State University’s Seidel School of Education and Professional Studies, and Paula Isett, director of the Lower Shore Child Care Resource Center (LSCCRC), were selected as a team to participate in the Head Start on Science Summer Leadership Institute recently held in Long Beach, CA. The team was one of only 10 selected throughout the United States to participate in the institute, a project sponsored by the National Center of Science in Early Childhood at California State University, Long Beach and supported by a grant from the American Honda Foundation.

During the five-day institute, Thatcher, Weaver and Isett studied techniques for providing professional development in the teaching of science for Head Start teachers, child care providers and prekindergarten/kindergarten teachers. During the coming year, the team will work to establish the LSCCRC and SSU as a training and dissemination center for developmentally appropriate science for young children and their teachers and parents. The center will serve the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and lower Delaware.

For more information on the Head Start Project, contact Isett at 410-543-6650.
