SU Elementary Education Cohort Program Continues Endeavors

Salisbury University Education Department SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University Education Department continues its endeavor to provide excellence in education for counties beyond the Lower Eastern Shore through its cohort program at Chesapeake College’s Eastern Shore Higher Education Center (ESHEC) in Wye Mills, MD.

This allows many students on Maryland’s Mid- and Upper Shore interested in pursuing an elementary education degree from SU to work within their communities to achieve their personal goals while providing a source of new teacher candidates for their hometown school districts.

Most of these students have completed an Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) at Chesapeake College and have been accepted into the Professional Teacher Education Program at SU.

This fall, 12 students are completing course work for their final stage of preparation to teach. They will be full-time interns in the spring, with graduation anticipated at the end of the semester.

They include Katie Bishoff of Trappe, MD; Nicole Bozarth of Chestertown, MD; Karen Carty of Centreville, MD; Sheila Lapp and Danielle Wilson of Easton, MD; Emilee Manship and Courtney Whitby of Ridgley, MD; Taylor McLaughlin of Cambridge, MD; Joseph Sonzone of Greensboro, MD; Valerie Stinchcomb of St. Michaels, MD; William Thompson of Vienna, MD; and Jordan Wetzel of Hurlock, MD.

Faculty and staff at SU and Chesapeake College support the cohort program. SU faculty and adjunct instructors travel to the ESHEC each semester to provide methods instruction to cohort members. Marylou Fineran is Salisbury University’s liaison to the cohort, working closely with Deborah Urry, executive director of the ESHEC, and Dr. Deanna Stock of Chesapeake College.

Students interested in learning more about the program should contact Fineran at 410-543-6284 or mmfineran@salisbury.edu.
