Galician Bagpipe Musician Cristina Pato Performs at SU Friday, September 26

Cristina PatoSALISBURY, MD---Galician bagpipe master and classical pianist Cristina Pato has performed with Yo-Yo Ma and played some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall.

On Friday, September 26, she brings her Migrations Band to Salisbury University. Their performance is 7 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Devoted to Galician popular and classical music, Pato hails from Galacia, Spain, an area heavily influenced by the Celts. Her career has led to concerts at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, as well as India’s Kamani Auditorium, the Jerusalem Festival, Brazil’s Liszt Festival, Italy’s Etnofestival, Mexico’s Palacio de Bellas Artes and multiple venues in her native Spain.

As a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, Pato has been filmed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville for the upcoming documentary The Sound of Silk. The New York Times has hailed her as “a virtuosic burst of energy.” The Wall Street Journal has called her “one of the living masters of the gaita.”

Sponsored by SU’s Cultural Affairs Office, her performance is made possible by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation’s ArtsCONNECT program, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Admission is free and the public is invited.

That evening, SU Dining Services presents its annual Hispanic Heritage Dinner, “¡La Fiesta!” featuring acoustic Hispanic social folk music by Chilean guitarist Isabel Umanzor. The dinner is 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Commons.
