SALISBURY, MD---With construction beginning in the fall for its new Teacher Education and Technology Complex (TETC), Salisbury University has signed an agreement to lease the two Dresser Inc. parking lots across Rt. 13 near the campus Athletics Fields. The lots open for the fall semester. The two will provide 645 parking spots; 625 spots are being lost to the TETC construction site at the West College Avenue and Rt. 13 intersection, said Greig Mitchell, SU vice president of administration and finance.
The Dresser lots, which will see some refurbishment by the University, are fenced and lighted. The campus will increase security including patrols by University Police, the addition of blue light phones and other safety measures.
A new 60-passenger bus is being purchased for a commuter loop between Main and East campuses. For safety and security reasons, entrances and exits to the Dresser lots will only be accessible from Avery and Wayne streets, with pedestrian traffic directed toward the Bateman Street underpass.
Working with student groups and state and local officials, the campus Parking and Transportation Planning Team, led by Mitchell, is also installing more bicycle racks on Main Campus. More sidewalks and bicycle paths are also being constructed on the campus periphery and areas nearby.
A color-coded parking permit system, currently used by students, faculty and staff, will be expanded and revised to include the new lots. Freshmen, sophomore and some junior commuters will be assigned to the East Campus/Dresser lots. (A limited number of spaces will be available to juniors on Main Campus.) Parking permits for the Dresser lots will be discounted.
Fall parking permits go on sale in July.
