Walton Attends National Humanities Institute

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University history professor Kristen Post Walton was selected from a national applicant pool to attend one of 29 summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports seminars and institutes at colleges, universities and other research institutions so teachers may work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities disciplines.

Walton participated in an institute entitled “Cultural Stress from Reformation to Revolution.”  The six-week program will be held at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.  Professors David Cressy (History, Ohio State University) and Lori Anne Ferrell (Reformation Studies, Claremont Graduate University) directed the institute.

“It was a fascinating experience with a brilliant group of faculty that came together and shared their knowledge and expertise with us,” Walton said. “It was a great resource for my classroom and my own research.”

The 16 teachers selected to participate in the program receive a stipend of $3,700 to cover their travel, study, and living expenses.

Topics for the 29 seminars and institutes offered for college and university teachers this summer include Civil Rights Movement, British Romantic fiction, the English Reformation, and major figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. The approximately 500 teachers who participate in these studies teach more than 30,000 American students this year.
