Five of Maryland's 2003 Top Teachers are SU Graduates

SALISBURY, MDóMore than one in five of Maryland’s 24 teachers of the year in 2003 call Salisbury University their Alma Mater.

SU alumni receiving the distinction this year include Bernadette Richardson in Caroline County, Nancy Phillips in Dorchester County, George Radcliffe Jr. in Queen Anne’s County, Aaron Deal in Wicomico County and Carvel LaCurts in Worcester County.

Dr. Dennis Pataniczek, dean of SU’s Samuel W. and Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education and Professional Studies, said the number of SU graduates named as teachers of the year reflected well on the University’s education and other programs.

“As in the past, SU graduates continue to be selected as Maryland school district teachers of the year,” he said. “This is a testimony to their superb professional skills, their efforts and their preparation. We are extremely proud that they are SU alums.”

Richardson received her Master of Education from the Seidel School in 1999. She teaches math to students in grades nine-12 at Colonel Richardson High School in American Corner.

Phillips earned her bachelor’s in elementary education from SU in 1984 and her Master of Education from the University in 1987. She is an early childhood reading specialist at Sandy Hill Elementary School in Cambridge.

Radcliffe earned his Master of Education from SU in 1977. He teaches seventh-grade science at Centreville Middle School.

Deal earned his bachelor’s in psychology from SU in 1993. He teaches computer courses for students in sixth-eighth grades at Salisbury Middle School.

LaCurts earned his bachelor’s in math at SU in 1970 and his Master of Education in 1974. He teaches math to students in 10th-12th grades at Pocomoke High School.
