SALISBURY, MD--- Step Afrika! USA performs at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center as part of Salisbury University's Multicultural Festival Week 2003.
The SU Step Squad, one of the University's newest clubs, opens for Step Afrika! The squad is co-sponsoring the show with the SU Office of Multiethnic Student Services.
Founded in December 1996, the Washington, D.C.-based Step Afrika! USA is the American representation of percussive dance elements found at the annual Step Afrika International Cultural Festival in Soweto, South Africa. The group's repertoire includes stepping, tap, modern, hip-hop, house and freestyle dancing, as well as South African dances such as Zulu and gumboot.
Step Afrika! USA reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed throughout North America, Europe and South Africa. In collaboration with the Soweto Dance Theatre from Johannesburg, South Africa, the company produced a new children's production as part of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Imagination Celebration series and recently completed a 60-city tour of American colleges and universities from Maine to Mississippi.
Admission to the May 1 performance is free, and the public is cordially invited.
