Community Greets Students During Welcome Week

SALISBURY, MD---For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Salisbury community welcomes back Salisbury University students with a downtown festival.

Scheduled from 3-9 p.m. Saturday, September 6, during the last day of SU’s Welcome Week, Party on the Plaza features performances by Cupajo, 3 Track Mind and Written Prisms, along with food and games. Urban Salisbury Inc. and the SU Office of Student Activities, Organizations and Leadership sponsor the event. Buses shuttle students from SU to downtown from 3-9:30 p.m.

In another first, the city has sent welcoming letters to some 1,200 new students and their families in a joint initiative with the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and Wicomico County Tourism Center.

“The city of Salisbury is proud to have been the hometown to Salisbury University for over 75 years,” wrote Mayor Barrie Parsons Tilghman, as she congratulated the students on their acceptance and invited them to participate in the life of the region, including city government internships.

Welcome Week officially begins Saturday, August 30, when the residents halls open at 9 a.m. for student move-in. Student activities for the next seven days include shopping trips, a Labor Day picnic, a student game show, karaoke night, sports night, multiple showings of the movie Remember the Titans and a lecture by Herman Boone and Bill Yoast, the real-life high school football coaches whose experiences inspired the movie. The week culminates with a performance by comedian Tiny Glover. Classes start Tuesday, September 2.
