Scarborough Excites SU With Financial Presentation

SALISBURY, MD---In the mid-1970s, professors at Salisbury University taught J. Michael Scarborough about leadership and commitment. Recently, he returned to his Alma Mater repay the favor.

Scarborough is a nationally known financial planner who has been quoted in Time, U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Post and Parade Magazine, as well as on NBC Nightly News. His company, The Scarborough Group, manages more than $1.5 billion in assets for 401(k) retirement plan participants.

A leader of the Maryland business world, Scarborough shared with the campus, from students to administrative assistants to President Janet Dudley-Eshbach, insights into financial markets and tips on planning and investing. His comments touched upon lifestyle habits (“Is your hobby shopping?” he asked) to credit card debt for college students (“Don’t!”) to plans for a balanced stock portfolio.

"Mike has provided a valuable service to our campus, with a clear, understandable and sensible approach to managing money, conveyed with humor and  empathy.  He is an alumnus who not only gives financially, but gives of himself.  We are most grateful," said Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach.

During the presentation, Scarborough recalled his days with the SU football team, an organization he says taught him how to be a leader. As a student, he founded SU’s chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, another leadership learning experience that continues to serve SU students today. As an employer, he often hires SU graduates.

Scarborough made a lasting impact on the campus in 1998, when he met what he called a “moral obligation” to SU by contributing more than $800,000 to build the Scarborough Student Leadership Center. The first building of its kind in the nation, the center serves the entire SU community as a gathering place for fraternities, sororities, academic honor societies and leadership programs. It opened in 2001.
