Welcome Week Activities Begin Friday, August 27

SALISBURY, MD---From the “Survival of Arrival” to the Party on the Plaza, Salisbury University welcomes its students during the next two weeks with comedy, music and plenty of opportunities to get involved in the campus community. Students move into residence halls from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, August 27, at the Quad. Welcome Week: The SU Real World begins at 3:30 p.m. with “Matriculation Mania,” a rally to kick off the academic year in the Maggs Physical Activities Center with music by Tuskan Radio, Sammy the Sea Gull and a welcome from President Janet Dudley-Eshbach. Some 604 students, each holding a piece of a huge 15-foot-by-25-foot jigsaw puzzle, work together to complete a picture of Sammy, which covers most of the gymnasium floor! A picnic follows. Friday events continue with Casino Night at 8 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Time cover girl Katie Koestner speaks to students about one of the darkest moments of her life 11 a.m. Saturday, August 28, in Maggs. Koestner brought national attention to the dangers of potential campus rape when she came forward as a sexual assault victim as a student at the College of William and Mary. Speaker Steve Birdine continues discussions in Maggs at 3 p.m., presenting, “Diversity: Creating a Campus Climate We Can All Enjoy.” A picnic is in the Quad from 4-7 that afternoon, followed by an interactive game show at 8 p.m. in the Wicomico Room. Students find out about life on campus through theatrical skits titled “Life on Campus” 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, August 29, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Free vans leave the GUC for area shopping from noon-2 p.m. Weekend events culminate with outdoor movie night featuring Starsky and Hutch and Ocean's Eleven in front of Holloway Hall at 8 p.m. Classes begin Monday, August 30. Those with afternoon breaks may take free vans for area shopping from 4-6 p.m., then unwind with mentalist Alain Nu at 8 p.m. in the Wicomico Room. Events in the Wicomico Room continue with karaoke 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, and Comedy Night featuring comedian Bill Burr 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 1. An Activities Fair is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, September 2, at the Pergola. Game night is 7 p.m. in the Wicomico Room. The SU Office of Student Activities also hosts 100 freshmen at that evening's Delmarva Shorebirds game, starting 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Urban Salisbury helps round out SU's welcome celebration with its second annual Party on the Plaza downtown from 4-7 p.m. Friday, September 10, featuring live bands, food and games.
