White Active in Foreign Language Conferences and Events

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Arlene White of Salisbury University’s Department of Modern Languages was selected as a folio reviewer for foreign language teacher education programs sponsored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

White will attend the training sessions in Philadelphia, Wednesday and Thursday, November 19-20. She also recently reviewed an article for Northeast Conference Review, the journal for the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

She and Frank Edgerton, Maryland supervisor for foreign languages and English as a second language, presented two workshops on the Eastern Shore, Monday-Tuesday, August 11-12, to familiarize middle and high school foreign languages teachers with new state standards currently being written. White also presented two in-service workshops for Wicomico County foreign language teachers Tuesday, August 12, and Wednesday, August 27, on curriculum and activity development and usage.

White will make three presentations at the Maryland Foreign Language Association's fall conference at the College of Notre Dame Saturday, October 11. She will give a presentation on teaching reading in the foreign language classroom titled "Are Your Students Up to PAR?" and another presentation with Wicomico High School principal Ruth Malone and Wicomico High School Spanish teacher Patricia Powell on the No Child Left Behind Act as it relates to foreign language programs.

She will also serve on a panel with Dr. Dora Kennedy and Dr. William DeLorenzo from College Park discussing the recruitment and retention of foreign language teachers.

White is also scheduling events for National French Week, November 5-11, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French, which celebrates the heritage of the French language and culture. Tentative events include a dinner, a lecture on the Louisiana Purchase by Dr. Tim O'Rourke, dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, an evening of French music, and a French film.
