St. Martin Presents Paper at Annual Conference in Antigua

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Gerald St. Martin of Salisbury University’s Modern Languages Department recently presented the paper “International Education: Study Abroad—Funding, Rewards, Assessment” at the 15th annual conference of the Association of Academic Programs in Latin America and the Caribbean in Antigua, Guatemala. During the presentation, St. Martin discussed the successful funding apparatus in place at SU that provides more resources for faculty development in international education—including travel to international conferences and start-up funds for international initiatives—and provides a fair remuneration for directors of international programs. His paper focuses on where international work fits in a faculty member’s progress toward tenure and promotion. St. Martin rejects the notion that international initiatives and ongoing programs should be part of a faculty member’s service to a university. Rather, he contends international efforts should be considered more as professional development to increase faculty incentive to actively participate in internationalizing curricula. At the conference, St. Martin also spoke on strategies to make a clearer case for international endeavors as professional development. He discussed administrative issues and provided a draft of an instrument to assess international program directors and provide evidence of professional growth. St. Martin has directed SU’s winter program in Ecuador for some 10 years. For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
