"Nabb Center Receives Federal IMLS Grant"

SALISBURY, MD---Senators Paul S. Sarbanes and Barbara A. Mikulski have announced that two Eastern Shore museums have been awarded grants totaling $7,550 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The IMLS distributed these grants under the auspices of the 1996 Museum and Library Services Act, which draws together federal support for museums and libraries.

The grants were awarded as follows: $3,820 to the Smith Island Center in Ewell; $3,730 to the Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury State University.

"I would like to commend the Smith Island Center an the Nabb Research Center for being recognized for these important grants," Sarbanes said.  "These funds are intended to help museums do what they do best; educate, inspire, inform, enhance, entertain and enrich the lives of the thousands of Marylanders and visitors they attract each year."

"Museums contribute to the rich quality of life in our communities," said Mikulski. "Like a magnet, museums attract people of all ages and backgrounds to their treasures.  They record our history, reflect our values and renew our sense of pride and wonder.  This grant will help the Smith Island and Nabb Research centers continue their missions to educate and entertain families for generations to come."

The two centers received these grants under the IMLS Conservation Assessment Program (CAP).  This program helps museums lay the groundwork for effective collections management.  The CAP grant supports a two-day visit by a conservation professional who reviews the overall condition of the museum's collection practices.  The conservator's recommendations help the museum establish an action plan to conserve their treasures for years to come.
