Career Day XI Thursday, November 19
For 10 years Career Day was packed into a single afternoon. This time, activities will be spread throughout the week of November 17-20 to provide even more opportunities and ensure that every student can take advantage of the invaluable career planning panels and workshops, according to Cathy Maynard, alumna and volunteer chair of the event. Faculty and alumni will be involved at an unprecedented level, partnering to provide students with insight into specific careers through classroom visits.
"We're networking with faculty, alumni and students as well as giving students solid information they can use in determining their career path," said Roy S. Perdue, alumni relations director. "We think that with the expanded opportunities we're providing with Career Day XI, we have a great nucleus from which to grow."
Career Day XI will run from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, November 19, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Students can choose one panel or sit in on several, listening to alumni experiences and asking questions about the world of work. The panels will cover Science, Medicine and Technology; Business and Finance; Community Service, Politics and Law; Arts, Culture, Public Relations and Global Communications; Education and Youth Development; and Entrepreneurship, Consulting and Small Business Ownership. Alumni are coming from as far away as Kentucky to participate.
Career Services has scheduled many special events that week. At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, a workshop on "Weaving the Web into Your Job Search" will be held in the Choptank Room. At 3:30 p.m., alumni Lisa Burkley, Bruce Beardmore and Hillary Harding will talk about careers in nonprofit.
"We teach students about networking, about how to get jobs. This is a perfect, real networking opportunity," said Dr. Rebecca A. Emery, director of Career Services. "We make it easy for them to walk up and talk with a person who may be able to help them. Anything from important contacts and insight to an interview to a job offer can come out of this."
Alumni Terry Daly, Mark Holloway and Dee Marshall, all experienced in making personnel decisions, will share their tips for successful interviewing at noon Wednesday, November 18, in Nanticoke B. Thursday, in addition to the Career Day panels, will feature drop-in resume reviews by alumni Marty Neat and John Herweh from noon-3 p.m. at Career Services.
The week wraps up from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, November 19, with instruction on using the Work Information Network (WIN) to find alumni who can help in a student's job search.
