Guerrieri University Center Art Space Presents Senior Dupree's 'Living Deliberately' October 2-31

SALISBURY, MD---The Guerrieri University Center Art Space hosts the exhibit “Living Deliberately” by Salisbury University senior art major Claire Dupree from October 2-31.

The cofounding president of the SU Art Club and winner of SU’s Marie A. Cavallaro Scholarship, Dupree has exhibited at Baltimore’s Charmed Life Gallery, among other venues. She hopes to continue her studies of art in graduate school before going on to teach at the collegiate level.

“In this information age, humans are decidedly less personal and interactive,” she said. “Vanity, anxiety, isolation and depression, amongst others, are traits perpetuated in contemporary culture and are themes I investigate in my bodies of work.

“I do so through the distortion of anatomy to create brutish, fleshy figures as a satirical representation of the technology-oriented generation of modernity. I attempt to construct universal scenarios for my figures to inhabit and passively encourage my viewer to relate or self-reflect upon both a grotesque and humorous portrayal of society.

“In conjunction with my comparatively vague figurative works, I am also interested in isolating very specific moments in vernacular youth culture. I value this as an equally effective form of communication as both present ideas in a manner which warrants extended meditation.

While my paint-handling and compositional understanding requires further development, I continue to experiment with various techniques in order to best execute my ideas. I work primarily in two dimensions; however, I have recently become interested in the possibilities of sculpture and textile. I seek influence from a variety of artists, including, but not limited to, Honoré Daumier, James Ensor, Frank Auerbach, and Cecily Brown.”
