SSU Foundation Adds Two Board Members: Michael Guerrieri & Kathryn Washburn

SALISBURY, MD--The Salisbury State University Foundation recently added two members to its board of directors: Michael S. Guerrieri, Guerrieri Venture Partnership L.P., and Kathryn C. Washburn, director of international affairs at the U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C.

We are very pleased that these friends of the University have agreed to be part of the volunteer leadership team of the SSU Foundation, said Marty Williams, vice president of advancement at Salisbury State. These individuals join a remarkable group of community leaders whose goal is to assist Salisbury State University in its quest for national eminence, in its Capital Campaign and to enhance the University s educational and cultural commitment to the region.

The Guerrieri name is synonymous with philanthropy at SSU. In 1990, the family made a donation to establish the Guerrieri Scholars Program, the largest scholarship at SSU. This scholarship program is open to students in all four endowed schools. The SSU Guerrieri University Center was named in honor of the family s contribution.

Michael Guerrieri and two siblings attended SSU before completing their degrees at other universities. Michael Guerrieri, who grew up in Salisbury, graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in finance. After graduating, he worked for the family s business, Showell Farms Inc., an integrated poultry company, until it was sold in 1995.

Washburn graduated from UCLA and earned her master s degree in public administration from George Washington University. She has been in her position with the Department of the Interior since 1990.

Washburn, a long-time friend of SSU, established a freshman scholarship for students from Somerset County 15 years ago. Her late husband, Wilcomb Washburn, received an honorary doctorate from SSU in 1996 and donated his significant collection of books on colonial history and American Indians to the University s Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture. Washburn, a member of the board of governors of the Research Center, recently facilitated a grant from the Donner Foundation to the Research Center.

She currently serves on the board of directors of Preservation Maryland and the board of the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Committee, and is active with the Somerset Historical Trust.
