Dr. Clara SmallPrincipal Speaker at Broward County (FL) Library Program

SALISBURY, MD--Dr. Clara L. Small, associate professor of history in the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts at Salisbury State University, was one of three principal speakers at a special program at the Broward County Library, Fort Lauderdale, FL. The program was titled, "Behind the Mask: Public Policy, Race and Culture in the Dawn of 20th Century America."

Small was on the program with Dr. W. Sherman Jackson, professor of American history and constitutional law, Miami (OH) University, and Ralph Moon, a communication specialist and student at the University of Cincinnati.

Small examined the political ideology of African-American leaders and how they challenged segregation. Some of the leaders included in the presentation were T. Thomas Fortune, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, Kelly Miller, Ida B. Wells-Barnett and William Monroe Trotter.

The Broward County Library received a mini grant from the Florida Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities to sponsor the presentation.
