SU Celebrates Safety Week 2010

SALISBURY, MD---Nationally known safety consultant Steve Kardian keynotes Salisbury University’s Safety Week Initiative 7 p.m. Monday, September 20, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Kardian has been a national media consultant for CNN, Fox News, CBS, NBC, Men’s Journal, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and Sports Illustrated, among others. He speaks on campus safety, crime prevention, women’s safety and self defense.

He earned accolades for a 2004 hidden camera report on Inside Edition, during which he posed as a stranger on a college campus in New York and asked female students for a ride. All eight women he approached immediately opened their car doors to him. It opened his eyes—and others’—to the need for more campus safety training.

Safety week begins with a safety fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, September 20, in Red Square. SU Police Chief Edwin Lashley hosts the meet-and-greet session “Who Protects Us?” from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 21, in the Commons.

The Student Government Association (SGA) invites students to take a safety pledge between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, in Red Square, vowing to be more safety aware. Campus Against Violence leads a “Four Corners” exercise and presentation at 7 p.m. that evening in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. The group is committed to sexual violence awareness and prevention.

SGA members and University Police team up to present Safe Travel Day from noon-2 p.m. Thursday, September 23, in the Fireside Lounge of the Guerrieri University Center. Students have the opportunity to play the Nintendo Wii game Mario Kart while wearing “drunk” goggles. Representatives from the SafeRide student bus service also will be on hand to answer questions.

Events culminate Friday, September 24, during Sea Gull Night Out, an alcohol-free party hosted by the Office of Student Activities, from 9 a.m.-1 a.m. on the Henson Science Hall Lawn.

Admission to all events is free. For more information visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
