SU Hosts Free Special Events During NCUR

SALISBURY, MD---Looking for a change of pace after presenting at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research? Here are a few things happening on Salisbury University’s campus.

Anyone in town early on Wednesday, April 9, is invited to a poetry reading by National Public Radio commentator Andre Codrescua social critic, humorist and Katrina survivor. He is the author of more than 25 books of essays, memoirs and poetry.  Held 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall, the talk is followed by a reception in the adjoining Social Room. 

On Thursday, April 10, NCUR participants are invited to “Graduate School in Psychology: Getting In and Getting Out,” a lunch-time panel discussion featuring three NCUR governors and psychology faculty: Holly Straub, Lauren Fowler and Mark Harvey. Held at noon in Henson Hall, Room 101, the panel addresses the overwhelming, and highly competitive process of applying to grad school. Attendees should bring lunchand questions! A Graduate School Fair featuring more than 50 colleges and universities is 1–5 p.m. in Maggs Gym. NCUR participants may pick up brochures and talk to representatives. From noon–3 p.m., there is an open house at the Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture in the Power Professional Building. The center is a treasure trove of information for students and visitors with records, maps and artifacts from the Delmarva Peninsula and Chesapeake Bay region. Or check out the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, named one of USA Today’s “10 Great Places to See American Folk Art.”  For a chance to speak one-on-one with NCUR plenary speakers Tyrone Hayes and Tom Horton, there’s an Environmental Issues Reception honoring them for their work 5:45 p.m. at the Philosophy House on Camden Avenue. Refreshments will be served.

For visitors with an interest in geographic information systems (GIS), there’s an open house on Thursday, and Friday, April 11, from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. at the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC) at SU.  Located in the Allenwood Shopping Center, the ESRGC provides a living laboratory for some 20 undergraduates to hone their professional GIS skills each year. They help provide technical GIS services to municipalities, counties and non-profit organizations on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Other Friday activities include an Undergraduate Research Summit 7:30 a.m. in the Montgomery Room of the Commons.  Held annually to discuss advancing undergraduate research, this year’s summit highlights ongoing talks between NCUR and the Council for Undergraduate Research. All faculty, staff and NCUR participants are invited. A continental breakfast will be served.

At 4 p.m., there’s a reception at the Center for International Education on Camden Avenue to celebrate student scholars and faculty mentors who have engaged in international research, cross-cultural studies and the interpretation of global texts.

At 4:30 p.m., NCUR participants are invited to meet the NCUR Board of Governors in the Social Room of Holloway Hall. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served. Also at 4:30 p.m., there’s an open house and reception for NCUR participants at the Honors House on Camden Avenue. Come and meet Honors Program students and faculty from the Eastern Shore.  Light refreshments are provided.

At 7 p.m., NCUR visitors may join SU fans at Sea Gull Stadium on Wayne Street to watch the nationally ranked men’s lacrosse team take on St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Admission is free with an NCUR badge.

Wrapping up the conference, on Saturday, April 12, NCUR participants may attend an open rehearsal of Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas from 1-3 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall. Performed by SU students, the opera is based on the poet Virgil’s tragic story of the Trojan refugee Aeneas who is shipwrecked in Carthage and falls in love with Dido, its legendary Queen.
