Senator Tom Carper Announces New SU Partnership

SALISBURY, MD---In a joint announcement on Monday, March 7, in the Social Room of Holloway Hall, Salisbury University’s President Janet Dudley-Eshbach and U.S. Senator Thomas R. Carper of Delaware established an inaugural internship for an SU student in the Senator’s office. Carper’s internships allow students a unique insider’s look into the political process. Dr. Harry Basehart of Salisbury University’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), the organization that will administer the program, noted that the new internship “will give our students an excellent opportunity to learn about the responsibilities of a U.S. senator, especially as it relates to the needs of Delaware constituents.” The Senator had lunch with some SU students, announced the new internship and then addressed Dr. Bobbi Adams’ class on American National Government. "I am proud to be affiliated with Salisbury University and look forward to working with some of its students in the future,” said Carper. “Interns are a valuable part of the political field and I could not do my job without them. I hope many take advantage of this opportunity." “This is the first time Senator Carper has been on the Salisbury University campus and I am delighted that he wishes to start a partnership program with us,” said Dudley-Eshbach. “We hope that it is the start of a long and fruitful relationship with the Senator and our University.” PACE has long held successful internship partnerships with many of Maryland’s political leaders. This is the first with the Delaware leadership. Carper became Delaware's junior Senator in 2001 after serving two terms as the state's governor, five terms as its congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives and six years as state treasurer. With his election to the U.S. Senate, he has been elected to statewide office a record 11 times. At the start of the 108th Congress, Carper became a member of the Senate Democratic Leadership. As a member of the four-person executive committee, he has emerged as a leading moderate voice in his party, advising the Leader and helping to devise, coordinate and implement strategy for the Democratic Caucus. Recently, he was instrumental in proposing federal legislation to limit abuse of class action lawsuits and has recommended the creation of Delaware’s first national park, celebrating the state’s coastal heritage.
