Summer Center Students Perform at Barnes & Noble in July

SALISBURY, MD---The Maryland Summer Center for the Arts at Salisbury University and Barnes and Noble Booksellers are teaming to give the community a chance to hear performances by some of Maryland’s most musically talented young people. The Summer Center Orchestra performs classical standards and contemporary popular pieces at Barnes and Noble in Salisbury 3 p.m. Monday, July 12. The center’s musical theatre class performs 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 14. Both groups feature some 40 Summer Center students from areas throughout Maryland. In addition, Barnes and Noble is sponsoring a scholarship for one Summer Center student, scheduled to be announced July 9. "We are excited about this collaboration with Barnes and Noble of Salisbury,” said Robert Smith, director of the Summer Center at SU. “The partnership is enriching in several ways:  it supports learning and literacy, offers young people an exciting opportunity to share their talents with a larger public, and continues the University's mission of community engagement." At the Summer Center, students entering grades 7-12 enjoy a two-week residential program offering intensive study in the fine and performing arts. Sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education, the program provides intensive training for students and offers them access to such institutions as the Kennedy Center, American Visionary Museum and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
