Kayak/Canoe Trail

Take a tour of the historic Nanticoke River on this beautiful canoe and kayak trail. The trail offers a glimpse of the wildlife that calls the Nanticoke River home. Using either a canoe or a kayak you can immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity that still exists along one of Maryland’s few rivers that still holds its original natural beauty. As you can see on the map the river is mostly bordered by wetlands and forests there are relatively few houses or agricultural farms that extend to the waterfront.

Launching Your Boat
Located in front of the Nanticoke River Center is a large pier that accommodates easy launch access for your canoes and kayaks. We recommend that during low tide that you launch from the floating dock located at the end of the pier. During high tide we recommend you launch from the shore line, however, keep in mind that there is muddy bottom at the shore.

Markers
The trail is marked with bamboo markers pictured above. They are marked with reflective tape if you choose to explore the waters at night and located at major turns along the trail.

Length
The trail takes around two to three hours to complete depending on your pace and direction of the tides.

Tides
This area of the river is tidal meaning the currents and water level are always changing! Check online for information about the tide before heading out.

Safety
Always let someone responsible know that you are heading out on the trail and when you expect to be back. Safety First!

Adjacent Parcel Owners
The property along the trail is owned by the Fish & Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, and a private owner. There are duck blinds and deer stands in the area so be aware of the hunting season which goes from September 5- February 5.
