
Course Information: This text takes a survey (appreciation style) approach to world music covering nine music cultures. It focuses on how to listen to and appreciate the music of different cultures and will appeal particularly to students who are non-music majors. The text discusses enough geography and history for the student to connect the music to its social context, while keeping the focus on listening. The text focuses on listening through (1) spotlights on non-Western instruments, and ( 2) 16 listening guides that track the audio step-by-step, pointing the listener to important characteristics. This course meets Group 1-B for General Education Requirements. Course Format : This course is offered online with no meetings in the classroom. We will sample music from around the world and use both videos and CDs to experience music from the past and present. The course will consist of discussions, online tests, chat, online master classes and a final project and online presentation of your favorite world music artist, style or composition.
