Jaan Rannik
Up-and-coming guitarist Jaan Rannik
has been receiving acclaim for his beautiful tone and exciting interpretations
from judges in recent competitions. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, he
gave his orchestral debut as a soloist with the Charleston County School of the
Arts at age 15, performing Vivaldi's concerto in D. The next year, at the age of
16, Jaan began studying with Marc Regnier at the College of Charleston. Later
that year, he placed third in the high school division of the South Carolina
Guitar Competition.
In 2007, Jaan received his Bachelor of Music degree from the prestigious
Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland, under the tutelage of
world-renowned teacher and performer Julian Gray. During that time, he performed
in master classes with internationally distinguished guitarists such as Pepe
Romero, William Kanengiser, Raphäella Smits, Richard Stone, Ray Chester, and
Manuel Barrueco. He is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at the
Peabody Conservatory, where he has been awarded a Peabody Scholarship and the
position of Graduate Assistant to Julian Gray.
In the spring and summer of 2009, he took top prizes in solo competitions in
Montreal, Canada and Greenville, North Carolina. Jaan also plays in a duo with
acclaimed guitarist Mark Edwards.
In addition to performing, Jaan maintains an active teaching schedule and as
a faculty member of the International School of Music in Bethesda.
Aside from his musical interests and pursuits, Jaan graduated Phi Beta Kappa
from Johns Hopkins University in 2007 with a B.A. in German.
