Derek Bowden

A member of the faculty since fall 2001, Bowden
has taught piano, Class Piano I and II, Music Appreciation,
Music and Landscape, Honors 311, Independent Study and
Undergraduate Research. His current focus is on a course that he
designed and has taught since fall 2008 titled Music and
Landscape. The course offers an interdisciplinary approach to
music interpretation using music as an application for
elucidating a variety of geographical, philosophical and
sociological themes. In addition to his teaching duties, Mr.
Bowden is also the managing director of the Salisbury Symphony
Orchestra.
Mr. Bowden’s research interests lie in American landscape
interpretations, identity and sense of place as revealed through
music. He completed his graduate studies at the University of
Delaware under the direction of Dr. Edmunds Bunksé and has
studied piano with Michael Brownlee, Misook Lee and Dr. Linda
Cockey. He serves on the SU Cultural Affairs Committee, the
Salisbury Symphony Orchestra Advisory Board and was a member of
the department's accreditation committee leading to its
membership to the National Association of Schools of Music. He
also serves as a grant reviewer on the Music ‘A’ panel for the
Maryland State Arts Council.
