Ensembles

Students at Salisbury University, whether music major or non-major, continue to benefit from the enjoyment and enrichment of the on-going educational experiences offered through the University's performance ensembles. Symphony Orchestra (MUSA 105) [Interest Form] meets on Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 9:45 p.m. and is open by audition to all students and community members.  The purpose of this ensemble is to expose students to a variety of standard orchestral literature and performance styles through both rehearsals and performances.  During each semester orchestra members will present public performances representing works they have studied and rehearsed.  At least one formal concert will be presented on campus each semester.  Scholarships are available for both music majors and non-majors.  Please contact Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen: [jgschoyen@salisbury.edu]


Concert Band MUSA 107 [Interest Form] meets on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:45 p.m. and is open to all students and community members.  Non-music majors are encouraged to participate.  The purpose of this ensemble is to rehearse and perform a variety of concert band music with appropriate performance technique and style.  The band performs a formal concert on campus at the end of each semester and also provides music for commencements and other formal university events.  Student audition for seating placement.  Scholarships are also available.  Please contact Mr. Lee Knier at (410) 677-5331 or leknier@salisbury.edu.


Jazz Ensemble ( Jazz Brazz Big Band ) MUSA 102 [Interest Form]
meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:45 p.m. and is open to all students and community musicians.  The purpose of this ensemble is to study and perform a variety of jazz styles including swing, bebop, cool, hard bop, contemporary, blues, fusion and Latin.  In addition, the study and application of improvisation skills are an integral part of the ensemble experience.  Each semester, students will study and apply various historical and stylistic performance practice, as well as jazz improvisation.  Performance background and some sight-reading skills are preferred.  Students audition for placement and scholarships.  Please contact Dr. Jerry Tabor at (410) 546-2476 or jntabor@salisbury.edu.


University Chorale (MUSA 100) [Interest Form] meets on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.  The objective of this ensemble is for students to develop critical listening skills and to become familiar with a variety of musical styles and poetic literature.  Goals include developing healthy vocal techniques, score study and exposure to a wide variety of choral repertoire.  Students audition for placement and scholarships.  Please contact Dr. William Folger, Director of Choral Studies at (410) 543-6386 or wmfolger@salisbury.edu.


Musical Theatre Workshop (MUSA 104-006) [Interest Form] meets on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. and is open to all students.  The purpose of this ensemble is to perform a medley of show tunes from a variety of Broadway musicals at the end of each semester.  The ensemble culminates with a final project, typically a dinner theatre production.  Goals include studying and choreographing selections from Broadway musicals.  Students audition for placement and scholarships.  Please contact Dr. William Folger, Director of Choral Activities at (410) 543-6386 or wmfolger@salisbury.edu.


Accompanying (MUSA 131) [Interest Form] is a class designed for ensemble work in both instrumental and vocal studies and its objective is to help keyboard players develop accompanying skills.  Students are typically assigned an ensemble and/or individual lesson to accompany.  This course is open to all students with extensive keyboard or accompanying background who wish to develop their accompanying skills.  Please contact Ms. Susan Zimmer at (410) 543-6385 or sezimmer@salisbury.edu


Chamber Choir (MUSA 106) [Interest Form] is a select group that meets on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m.  An audition is required for all majors.  The objective of this group is to study repertoire consisting of primarily unaccompanied works from all style periods and to perform a concert each semester on campus.  Please contact Dr. William Folger, Director of Choral Activities at (410) 543-6386 or wmfolger@salisbury.edu.


Chamber Ensembles (MUSA 103) [Interest Form] are small ensembles designed for a variety of instruments.  The goal of these ensembles is to provide an opportunity for students to play chamber music literature that students would otherwise not be able to perform.  The objective of each ensemble is to perform a program of chamber music at the end of each semester.  Guitar, brass, woodwind, percussion, strings, harp and world music ensembles are available each semester, depending upon student need and availability.  These ensembles are open to all majors.  For more information, contact the Department of Music at (410) 543-6385 or Dr. Linda Cockey, Chair, Department of Music, lecockey@salisbury.edu.


The Salisbury Chorale (MUSA 110-001), [Interest Form] a non-auditioned ensemble of mixed SATB voices, meets on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.  The ensemble typically performs the masterworks of the choral repertoire.  Membership is open to students, faculty, staff, administration, and the community at large.  SU students may also enroll in MUSA 110-001 (Salisbury Chorale) for 1 course credit.  The Salisbury Chorale often collaborates with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra. Please contact Dr. William Folger,  Director of Choral Activities at (410) 543-6386 or wmfolger@salisbury.edu.


Salisbury University Pep Band [Interest Form] is a non-auditioned student club initiated and run by SU music majors.  This club is open to all SU students with instrumental experience and background in woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.  The pep band meets every Saturday morning 10:30 to 11:30, before scheduled football games.  The Pep Band may also play during other events.  Please contact Mr. Lee Knier at (410) 543-6381 or leknier@salisbury.edu.


Opera Workshop (MUSA 103-008)) – Auditioned ensemble open to majors and non majors. This course requires a year commitment to intense vocal and acting technique study with an introduction to baroque opera style culminating in a production of Monteverdi's Madrigals of Love and War & Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. World Drum Ensemble (MUSA 103-006)-- This course is designed to guide the student through his/ her introduction to the techniques playing world percussion instruments. Throughout the semester the student will be introduced various rhythms and instruments from Latin America, Africa and other nations from around the world, including; Conga drums, Djembe, claves, talking drums, shakers, and various bells.
