This subject guide is intended to be a starting point for your research on historical topics.  Recommended databases, journals, reference tools, and websites are listed (and linked when it is an electronic resource) from the menu above. 


Books

Books in Blackwell Library:

  • Search the online Library Catalog for books in Blackwell Library.  You can search by Title, Author, Subject or Keyword, or you can do a browse search.   The books you can check out say "Stacks" before the call number and are located on the second floor of the library. Click on the title of the book and then the "availability" button to find your books location.

Ordering books from the USMAI catalog:

  • To find anthropology books that are available in Blackwell Library and other libraries throughout the University System of Maryland, use the online catalog.  Books take about 3-5 business days to arrive at Blackwell. You will be notified with email upon your books arrival.

Using Interlibrary Loan (ILIAD)

  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service offered to patrons who are unable to find certain books or articles through Blackwell Library or other USMAI Libraries.  Library staff may be able to request these items if they are owned by libraries across the United States. You will have to create your own ILIAD account.

Databases

These are databases in which you will find articles relating to history.  These links will only work from on campus.  For off-campus access, please use Research Port.

  • Academic Search Premier - a multidisciplinary database from EBSCO with a mix of scholarly and popular resources, a lot of full-text and Find It links when there is no full-text available. 

  • American History and Life  - Information on articles, books, book reviews, and dissertations on U.S. and Canadian history from prehistory to the present. Covers more than 2000 international worldwide. Includes links to full text of selected journal articles.

  • Early American Newspapers - Included in Archive of Americana (Readex), Early American Newspapers indexes & provides full text of hundreds of historic newspapers listed in Clarence Brigham's authoritative bibliography. Excellent source for primary documents.

  • Historical Documents Series  - This series of publications is issued annually with approximately 100 full-text primary source documents in each volume, covering the most significant events that happen each year.

  • Historical New York Times  - This database provides full-text and full-image articles from the New York Times. The collection includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue--cover to cover--in downloadable PDF files.  Excellent source for primary documents.

  • Historical Statistics of the United States - Complete text of the 5 volume Millennial edition, 2006. Provides data in electronic format useful for statistical analysis.

  • Historical Washington Post - This database provides full-text and full-image articles from the Washington Post. The collection includes digital reproductions of every page from every issue--cover to cover--in downloadable PDF files. Excellent source for primary documents.

  • Humanities International Complete - A comprehensive database of humanities content, providing full text of hundreds of journals, books & other published sources from arount the world. This database includes data from American Humanities Index & Humanities International Index.

  • JSTOR -Electronic archive of core journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Includes complete runs of journals with full-text of all articles published prior to the most current five years.

  • Maryland State Archives  -  The Maryland State Archives is the historical agency for Maryland and serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Records date from the founding of the colony in 1634 to the present.

  • U.S Congressional Serial Set, 1817-1980 - Provides indexing & full text of historical reports, documents, & journals of the U. S. Senate & House of Representatives.

  • Women and Social Movements in the United Sates 1600-2000  - A resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000.
