Background Notes (U.S. Dept. of State) - "Factual publications that provide information on all the countries of the world with which the US has relations.  They include facts on the country's land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and its relations with other countries and the United States."

CIA World Factbook (Central Intelligence Agency) - The CIA provides users with an excellent concise country overview (map, introduction, geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues).

Ready Reference G 123 .W5 2004

Country Commercial Guides - The Country Commercial Guides publication for each country can be obtained through the website.  Click on the link to the left 'Market Research'; choose the link 'country and industry reports'.  You will be asked to register as a Student/Researcher.  Once registered, choose the country and report type 'Country Commercial Guides'.  *The 'Marketing US Products & Services' chapter in these guides are excellent and provide an overview of how to set up business for that country.  *The 'Business Travel' chapter provides cultural and customs information.  Other report types include:  Industry Sector Analysis, International Market Insight, Multilateral Development Bank Report, Market Research - International, Market Research - Global, Trade Directory and Events.

Country Studies/Area Handbook Series (Library of Congress) - "The Country Studies Series  presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.  At present, 102 countries and regions are covered.  Notable omissions include Canada, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and other Western nations, as well as a number of African nations."  Country Briefings - The website includes both free and fee based links to news, country profiles, forecasts, and statistics. 

Europa Yearbook

Ready Reference JN 1 .E86 2001 v. 1-2
Well-known source that provides historical and political overviews as well as contacts within the country. 

Global Country Guides (Deloitte)
- Very similar to PriceWaterhouse's Doing Business In ... well-known series, these guides provide "valuable information about regulatory, tax and business matters, including the investment climate, labour relations and work force considerations, business regulations, foreign investment and tax rates for major trading nations."  Under the 'Services' drop down menu from the front page, select Tax.  On the next page, click on the link to 'Country Guides.' 

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe (Database)
Off-campus, sign in using your ID barcode and last name.  Choose Salisbury University as the campus and then click the log in button. 

For Country Reference Sources:

  • From the front page, left side menu, click on 'Reference'
  • Next, click on the area you need 'Country Profiles' or 'World Almanac'
  • Enter the name of your country in the search box.
  • Use the pull-down menu to select a source.

Note:  Walden's Country Reports (under the 'Country Profiles' area) provide excellent country overviews.

Statesman Yearbook

"The Statesman Yearbook provides accurate and comprehensive information on the current political, economic and social status of every country in the world.

The STAT-USA (Globus & NTDB) Database
provides access to widely used government publications focused on international trade, country analysis, and economic data.  This database is only available in the reference area on the 1st floor of the Blackwell Library.  Please ask the desk staff to sign you in.

World Economic Factbook (Euromonitor)

Reference HC 59.15 .W675 2004-05
"Brings together otherwise hard-to-find political and economic information on 205 countries.  Includes summaries of the economic and political status for each country.  Also includes rankings on specific socio-economic data." 

World Economic Outlook - "The World Economic Outlook presents the IMF staff's analysis and projections of economic developments at the global level, in major country groups (classified by region, stage of development, etc.), and in many individual countries.  It focuses on major economic policy issues as well as on the analysis of economic developments and prospects.  It is usually prepared twice a year, as documentation for meetings of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, and forms the main instrument of the IMF's global surveillance activities."
