Books

S&P Industry Surveys
Reference HC 106.6 .S74 v. 1-3

Refer to the Company/Industry Index in the beginning of each volume.  Locate your company name (or a company similar to yours) to find the Industry Section.  Begin reviewing the 'Outlook' for your industry in the front of any of the volumes.  This will provide a snapshot of trends in the industry.  Next, go to the full profile for your industry. 

Each industry profile provides:  (1) Current Environment; (2) Industry Profile; (3) Industry Trends; (4) How the Industry Operates; (5) Key Industry Ratios and Trends; (6) How to Analyze A Company in the specific Industry; (7)  Industry References [periodicals, trade associations, & government agencies]; and (8) Comparative Company Analysis.

Sourcebook of Zip Code Demographics.
Reference | HA203 .S66

Statistics on population, income, age, race, education, employment for every zip code in the United States. Also includes purchasing potential for several categories of products or services such as apparel, footwear, groceries, furniture, and investments. Good source to use when trying to determine what the market and competition might be in a certain area.

Databases

Gale Business Insights: Essentials
Business Insights: Essentials brings together in a single database company profiles, company brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information.  Coverage is from 1980 to the present.   

JSTOR Business Collection I
The forty-seven titles in the Business Collection are drawn from Arts & Sciences I, II, and IV.  The collection brings together core titles in economics and finance, including many publications from the leading scholarly scholarly societies, with a range of critical research journals in accounting, labor relations, marketing, management, operations research, and risk assessment.

Morningstar [2 seats]
Find a stock or fund to meet your needs, research current or prospective holdings or see how your investments work together.  Morningstar's data reports cover more than 20,000 securities.  Historical data back to 1996.

Off-campus, sign in using your Gull Card barcode and last name.  Choose Salisbury University as the campus and then click the log in button. 

  • Under 'Reports', enter a company's ticker or name and click on 'Go'.
  • Click on the various links across the left of the screen for detailed information (Snapshot, Quote, Analyst Research, Morningstar Rating, Data Interpreter, Valuation Ratios, Financial Statements, Key Ratios, Charts, Dividends & Returns, SEC Filings, Owners & Estimates).
  • Remember to click on 'End Session' at the top right to exit program.

Business Source Premier
Contains citations to articles in business magazines and academic journals. Many of the articles are available full text. There are many full text Real Estate journals in BSP such as Real Estate Economics, Real Estate and Real Estate Finance.

Lexis Nexis

  • On the left hand side click on the "Legal" tab

  • Click on the link for Federal and State Codes

  • Below the main search box in the pull down menu pick "Maryland Annotated Code"

  • Search away!

Hoover's Company Information (Lexis-Nexis)
This database provides full-text information about companies, industries, and the people who lead them.

Hoover's Company Information (ProQuest)
This ProQuest database is easier to use than the Lexis-Nexis version of Hoovers.  It also provides full-text information about companies, industries, and the people who lead them.

Mergent/FIS Online (previously known as Moody's) [5 seats]
Blackwell Library subscribes to the U.S. Company Data module which offers a wealth of detail on items including business description, history, property, subsidiaries, officers & directors, long-term debt and capital stock.  Off-campus, sign in using your Gull Card barcode and last name.  Choose Salisbury University as the campus and then click the log in button. 

  • Do a 'Basic Search' for the company name or ticker symbol.
  • Click on the company name on the next search screen.
  • Click on the various tabs across the top for detailed information (Company Details, Company Financials, EDGAR (SEC Documents), News, & Tear Sheets (Stock performance snapshot).

Value line Investment Survey
The Value Line Investment Survey is one of the most widely used independent investment information services in the world. Its up-to-date, weekly issues are a comprehensive reference source. Its coverage is encyclopedic, covering some 1,700 equity issues.

Wall Street Journal

For local newspapers use this Regional Business News database.

Locating Harvard Business Review Articles in ResearchPort

HBR Publishing will not allow Harvard Business Review articles to be posted (scanned or linked) in eReserves or course management software such as WebCT.

To locate the full-text of a specific HBR article in ResearchPort:

  • Log-in to the Business Source Premier database  (off-campus, sign-in with your 14-digit barcode on the back of your ID Card and last name)
  • At the top of the database main page, click on the Advanced Search tab
  • Select 'SO Publication Name' in the first pull-down menu and in the text box enter Harvard Business Review
  • Select 'Title' in the second pull-down menu and in the text box enter the title of the article. Remember to leave off articles such as the, a, an, etc.
  • Click the search button at the top right
  • Review the results list for the specific article needed.
  • Click on the PDF version of the article so that graphics are included.  Click on the print icon in Adobe to print the article rather than printing from the Internet browser.   If the PDF version is used versus the HTML version, the author may cite the article as if it came from the publication versus citing the article as an internet file.

To locate an article on any other business topic, open ResearchPort.  Choose Business from the list of possible topics.  Choose a particular database, or choose to cross search multiple databases.  Get started by using the search box below!

Corporate Information - Over 15,000 research reports on publicly-traded companies from around the world.

Hoover's Online (in LEXIS-NEXIS) Background information and financial data on thousands of public and private companies; also news, investment tools,   NOTE:In the Lexis-Nexis version of Hoovers, type in search box: CO open/closed parentheses around the company name   ie. CO(Boeing)


Securities and Exchange Commission - Investor and regulation information, direct from the federal government.  Includes financial statements from all public US corporations, and suggestions on how to find how much various companies officers are paid.

InfoSpace - Yellow pages and white pages.

Stocks & Mutual Funds

CNN / Money - Database of stock and bond funds.

Silicon Investor - Financial information on high-tech companies and related message boards.

Sound Money - Information about investing, insurance, retirement and mutual funds, and taxes; web site for the Public Radio program which airs on WSCL (see broadcast schedule).

Yahoo! Finance - Stock and company research.


International

CBS Marketwatch Global Markets - Links to major international indices, international stocks, foreign exchange rates.   

Europages - European business directory with information on 500,000 companies from 30 countries. 

The Financial Times - World and business news, market updates, etc.

International Business Resources on the WWW - Directory maintained by the Michigan State University center for International Business Education and Research.  Has very interesting links.

Kompass.com - Information on 1.5 million companies, 600,000 trade and brand names, 23 million key product and service references and 2.9 million executive names.  


Products

Consumer World -  news and information about products, services, scams, and special offers.

Thomas Register of American Manufacturers - information about a wide variety of products; free, but registration is required. 


Industries

One way to find industry information is to visit the web site of the  association for that particular industry.  Here are three web-based indexes to associations:

ASAE Gateway to Associations - Database of nearly seven thousand associations with  web presences from the American Society of Association Executives.   

Associations on the Net  - A collection of over 1100 internet sites providing information about a wide variety of  professional and trade associations, cultural and art organizations, etc.

Current Industrial Reports - information from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Directory of Associations - Provides detailed information for over 35,000 associations.

US Department of Commerce - business and economic news, statistics on production, imports and exports, etc.


News

American City Business Journals - Selected weekly articles from the print versions of these magazines plus daily web content, covering business news from more than 40 US cities

Bloomberg Online - Investing and general interest news.  Has investing tools, portfolio tracker, feature articles about world markets, plus nearly current stock quotes.


Statistics

Bankrate.com - Current rates on mortgages, CDs, loans, bank IRAs and credit cards.

Currency Converter – Currency-related web services, including daily exchange-rate updates; from Olsen and Associates.

Economic Statistics Briefing Room - From the White House; provides links to information produced by a number of federal agencies and provides access to current federal economic indicators.  

Fedstats -  More than 70 agencies in the federal government produce statistics of interest to the public.  The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this site to provide easy access to the full range of statistics and information produced by these agencies for public use.
