Country Analysis

After consulting the STAT-USA Database publications, pick and choose among the sources below to fill in the gaps.  Review the publication description and select based on the data type(s) needed:

Country Studies/Area Handbook Series (Library of Congress) - "The Country Studies Series  presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.  At present, 102 countries and regions are covered.  Notable omissions include Canada, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and other Western nations, as well as a number of African nations."  (Demographics, Government, Culture, & Economic)

Demographic Yearbook

"The United Nations Demographic Yearbook is a unique source of national population and vital statistics, published annually, for over 230 countries or areas in the world.  It provides statistics on population size and composition, fertility, mortality, infant and fetal mortality, marriages and divorces."  (Demographics) - From the main page, see the link to 'Doing ebusiness in ...' and then select the specific country.  The information provided will indicate technology readiness that is useful in assessing successful entry probability for many types of industry whether focused on ebusiness or not.  (Business)  Country Briefings - The website includes both free and fee based links to news, country profiles, forecasts, and statistics.  (Brief overview of all data categories)

Europa Yearbook

Well-known source that provides historical and political overviews as well as contacts within the country.  (Government)

IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook

The WCY analyzes and ranks the ability of nations to create and maintain an environment that sustains the competitiveness of enterprises.  It provides extensive coverage of 61 countries and regional economies and ranks them by 300 competitiveness criteria.  (Economic)

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provides concise tabular data per country.  (Economic)  

Statesman Yearbook

U.S. Direct Investment Abroad
C 59.20/2:     (1st Floor Documents Stacks) - Presents tabular data covering (1) Foreign-affiliate financial and operating data, (2) US parent financial and operating data, and (3) direct investment position and balance of payments data.  Data is presented per country and per industry.  (Economic, FDI)

World Bank - Choose a specific country from the main page for quickest access to information.  Click on the link 'Data & Statistics' and see the topics section for excellent information on how to start a business in the country the project team has chosen.  (Economic, Starting a Business)

World Economic Factbook (Euromonitor)

"Brings together otherwise hard-to-find political and economic information on 205 countries.  Includes summaries of the economic and political status for each country.  Also includes rankings on specific socio-economic data."  (Demographics, Economic, Political, Risk Analysis)

World Economic Outlook - "The World Economic Outlook presents the IMF staff's analysis and projections of economic developments at the global level, in major country groups (classified by region, stage of development, etc.), and in many individual countries.  It focuses on major economic policy issues as well as on the analysis of economic developments and prospects.  It is usually prepared twice a year, as documentation for meetings of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, and forms the main instrument of the IMF's global surveillance activities."  (Economic)
