The Health Care in China Study abroad program provides nursing students and other health care providers the opportunity to observe the meshing of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine practiced in health care facilities in Jingzhou, Hubei Province, China. The two week trip to China will afford the students opportunities to see the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine practices in hospitals, be taught some modalities by traditional Chinese medicine doctors and interact with nursing students. Health care facilities that practice western medicine or a combination of eastern and western medicine will also be visited.

COURSE:  Students will be registered for the following course during the summer I semester.

NURS 415:  Special Topics:  Health Care in China: Study Abroad – An introduction to health care in China, including Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities such as acupuncture, moxibustion and massage. Use of western medicine practices in a traditional Chinese culture will also be explored.

EXCURSIONS:  Participants travel to Beijing, then on to Yichang by plane. Next ground transportation will bring the group to the ancient city of Jingzhou where Yangtze University is located. While in Jingzhou, approximately 7 days will be spent increasing knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine and learning about how eastern and western health care practices are combined in care. A tour of the city including the historical Jingzhou museum is included during this time. Participants will then travel back to Beijing to visit The Great Wall, The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. One day will be allotted for shopping at the Silk Market and/or visiting a temple for those interested.

HOUSING: While staying in Jingzhou, students and faculty will be housed on campus in a dormitory, if room is available. If dormitory space is not available the group will stay at a nearby hotel. While in Beijing the group will be staying in a hotel.
