Traditional Chinese Medicine

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Study abroad program provides nursing students and other health care providers the opportunity to observe Traditional Chinese Medicine practiced in a hospital in Jingzhou, Hubei Province, China. This two week program in China will afford the students opportunities to see the application of traditional Chinese Medicine practices in hospitals, to be taught some modalities by traditional Chinese medicine doctors and to interact with nursing students.

COURSE:  All participants must register for the 1 credit course during the summer I semester.

NURS 415:  Special Topics:  Traditional Chinese Medicine: Study Abroad – An introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine, including the following topics: Yin-Ying and the five elements, meridians and collaterals, pathogenesis, prevention and therapeutic principles, acupuncture, moxibustion and massage.

Students interested in a deeper academic study are encouraged to enroll in the 2 credit course NURS 415: Special Topics: Traditional Chinese Medicine during spring semester.  Nursing majors can combine the 2 credit spring course and the 1 credit study abroad program course to count as a combined 3 credit elective towards the Nursing major.

While in Jingzhou, approximately 7 days will be spent increasing knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A tour of the city including the historical Jingzhou museum is included during this time. Participants will then travel back to Beijing where the group will visit The Great Wall, The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. One day will be allotted for shopping at the Silk Market and/or visiting a temple for those interested.

DEPOSIT AND PAYMENT INFORMATION:  An initial deposit of $250 is due at the time of application.  This deposit is part of the total advertised cost of the program.  Once a student is academically admitted by the faculty director, the initial non-refundable deposit is due to the Cashier’s Office.  The student will be automatically enrolled into the study abroad course.  The University Billing Office will then bill each registered student for the total cost of the study abroad program (less the deposit amount) through the regular university billing system.  Standard University deadlines for withdrawals do not apply to study abroad programs.  Once the published Application Deadline occurs, the accepted student is responsible for the entire amount of the study abroad program charge.

APPLICATION INFORMATION:  Application forms are available at the Center for International Education or from the faculty director.   Completed application forms are currently being accepted by the faculty director or by the Center for International Education.  Students should also submit a completed faculty recommendation form from a faculty member who knows the student well.  Admission is competitive and enrollment is limited.  Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full.  The application deadline is February 15, 2011.  For more information, see the program website at www.salisbury.edu/intled/studyabroad/summer/china_nursing .  All questions concerning the program should be addressed to the program director:
