
The
Traditional Chinese Medicine Study abroad program
provides nursing students and other health care
providers the opportunity to observe Traditional Chinese
Medicine practiced in a hospital in Jingzhou, Hubei
Province, China. This two week program
in China will afford
the students opportunities to see the application of
traditional Chinese Medicine practices in hospitals,
to be
taught some modalities by traditional Chinese medicine
doctors and to interact with nursing students.
COURSE:
All participants must register
for the 1 credit course during
the summer I semester.
NURS 415: Special
Topics: Traditional Chinese Medicine: Study Abroad –
An
introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine,
including the following topics: Yin-Ying and the five
elements, meridians and collaterals, pathogenesis,
prevention and therapeutic principles, acupuncture,
moxibustion and massage.
Students
interested in a deeper academic study are encouraged to
enroll in the 2 credit course NURS 415: Special
Topics: Traditional Chinese Medicine during spring
semester. Nursing majors can combine the 2 credit
spring course and the 1 credit study abroad program
course to count as a combined 3 credit elective towards
the Nursing major.
EXCURSIONS:
Participants travel to Beijing, then on to Yichang by
plane. Ground transportation will then bring the group
to the ancient city of Jingzhou where Yangtze University
is located. While in Jingzhou, approximately 7 days will
be spent increasing knowledge of Traditional Chinese
Medicine. A tour of the city including the historical
Jingzhou museum is included during this time.
Participants will then travel back to Beijing where the
group will visit The Great Wall, The Forbidden City and
Tiananmen Square. One day will be allotted for shopping
at the Silk Market and/or visiting a temple for those
interested.
HOUSING: While
staying in Jingzhou, students and faculty will be housed
on campus in a dormitory, if room is available. If
dormitory space is not available the group will stay at
a nearby hotel. While in Beijing the group will be
staying in a hotel.
COST: Costs
are to be determined and will include SU tuition and fees, international
airfare, in-country travel, housing and some meals in
China, international health insurance, and travel
support by the faculty director. Not included: passport
and visa fees, some incidental expenses.
DEPOSIT AND PAYMENT INFORMATION:
An initial deposit of
$250 is due at the time of application. This deposit is
part of the total advertised cost of the program. Once
a student is academically admitted by the faculty
director, the initial non-refundable deposit is due to
the Cashier’s Office. The student will be automatically
enrolled into the study abroad course. The University
Billing Office will then bill each registered student
for the total cost of the study abroad program (less the
deposit amount) through the regular university billing
system. Standard University deadlines for withdrawals
do not apply to study abroad programs. Once the
published Application Deadline occurs, the accepted
student is responsible for the entire amount of the
study abroad program charge.
APPLICATION INFORMATION:
Application forms are
available at the Center for International Education or
from the faculty director. Completed application forms
are currently being accepted by the faculty director or
by the Center for International Education. Students
should also submit a completed faculty recommendation
form from a faculty member who knows the student well.
Admission is competitive and enrollment is limited.
Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the
program is full. The application deadline is
