Summer Program in the Baltics

The Perdue School of Business Summer Program in the Baltics next runs for three weeks from late May-early June, 2010. The Perdue School of Business, in collaboration with the University of Tartu, in Estonia, has created the program, which offers students a chance to experience first hand two of the most dynamic economies in Eastern Europe. The Baltic States are developing their economies at an impressive rate. Estonia is one of the leaders in business growth in the region, and across the gulf, Finland has been a major player in the development of the region. Thus, the program also incorporates a visit to Helsinki, Finland. Estonia and Finland provide a unique location to study international business in dynamic 21st century Europe.

CLASSES:

BUAD 396: Business Study Abroad - Examines issues in business administration in an international setting. Specific topics selected from the fields of accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management, or marketing depending on the faculty’s area of expertise. Part or all of the course is held outside the United States. Prerequisite: Admission to the relevant Perdue School study abroad program. 3 credits.

BUAD 696: Graduate Business Study Abroad - Examines advanced business topics in an international setting.  HOST INSTITUTION: The University of Tartu was founded in 1632 by the King of Sweden Gustav II Adolph. It is one of the principle institutions of higher learning in Estonia producing more than 70 percent of the Ph.D.s in Estonia. Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia, with a population of just over 100,000. Twenty percent of the residents of Tartu are college students. Nestled on the banks of the River Emajõgi, Tartu is one of the intellectual centers of the vibrant Baltic states. Salisbury and Tartu enjoy a long and cordial relationship as Sister Cities, with the Sister Cities International Organization.

EXCURSIONS: Excursions include the capital of Estonia, Tallinn, the ocean-side resort town of Parnu, nestled on the Baltic sea, and an overnight excursion to the capital of Estonia’s immediate international neighbor, Helsinki, Finland. During your free weekend, you might visit Stockholm in Sweden, St. Petersburg in Russia or Riga in Latvia.

HOUSING: Students stay in youth hostels owned and operated by the University of Tartu. While on excursions, students are housed in tourist-class hotels.

COST: TBA. Final costs will be determined in spring 2010.  Costs include all tuition and fees, international airfare, lodging, field trips, scheduled sightseeing, some meals and substantial travel support both by the Salisbury University faculty director and the University of Tartu.  A breakdown of estimated costs is available on the program website.

DEPOSIT AND PAYMENT INFORMATION:  An initial deposit of $800 is due at the time of application.  This deposit is part of the total advertised cost of the program.  Once a student is academically admitted by the faculty director, the initial non-refundable deposit is due to the Cashier’s Office.  The student will be automatically enrolled into the study abroad course.  The University Billing Office will then bill each registered student for the total cost of the study abroad program (less the deposit amount) through the regular university billing system.  Standard University deadlines for withdrawals do not apply to study abroad programs.  Once the published Application Deadline occurs, the accepted student is responsible for the entire amount of the study abroad program charge.

APPLICATION INFORMATION:  Application forms are available at the Center for International Education or from the faculty director.   Admission to the program is competitive and program enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Students will be selected based on the following criteria: business discipline, grade point average, written essay, interview and letters of recommendation. All students must be in good conduct standing with the University. Applications are reviewed as soon as they are received. Acceptances are made on a rolling admittance.
