International Teaching Internship in Beijing, China

The International Teaching Internship in Beijing has been providing the opportunity for student interns to complete 5 to 6 weeks of their teaching internships with the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) since 2006.  WAB is a non-profit English language independent international school serving the expatriate community in Beijing.  SU elementary education and early childhood student interns have the opportunity to teach students from China and 54 other countries, speaking 41 languages, while living in one of the great metropolises of the world, the capital city of China.

CLASS: Students are able to intern at WAB during  spring semesters for 5 to 6 weeks.  The remaining time of the internship will be completed in MD schools either before or after the international internship. Student interns in China take part in the teaching internship seminar (EDUC 411) back on SU campus through a hybrid online course.  Combining digital video, e-mail, online postings, and electronic portfolios, China interns continue to work with their faculty back in Salisbury while working with their international mentor teachers in Beijing.

HOST INSTITUTION: The Western Academy of Beijing is an International Baccalaureate World School offering curriculum at the early childhood, elementary, middle and high school levels.  At the elementary school level it offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP).  Located on a secured campus on the outskirts of Beijing, WAB’s facilities include separate buildings for each of its educational levels.  Total student enrollment is 1400 with approximately 100 students at each grade level.  The WAB faculty also comes from all over the world, with the majority coming from the USA, New Zealand, Australia, UK, and Canada.  WAB embraces the unique learning opportunities that its host country China provides. These opportunities include integration of the China context throughout the school’s programs, and involve students knowing, understanding and appreciating themselves and the world through understanding and appreciating China.
