International Teaching Internship in New
Zealand
The
International Teaching Internship in New Zealand is one of the
oldest and most respected international programs at Salisbury
University. The Department of Teacher Education has been
sending student teachers to complete 6 to 8 weeks of their
teaching internships with the Auckland Public School system in
Auckland, New Zealand since 1991. World renown for its
educational system and especially its literacy programs, the New
Zealand school systems offer a first-class teaching experience
to SU student teachers.
CLASS:
Students are able to intern in schools in Auckland, New Zealand
during fall and spring semesters. Summer internships are also
available, but the 100 days required in MD still applies; the
remaining time of the internship will be completed in MD schools
either before or after the summer experience. Students in New
Zealand attend the teaching internship seminar (EDUC 411) back
on SU campus through a hybrid online course. Combining digital
video, e-mail, online postings, and electronic portfolios, New
Zealand interns continue to work with their faculty back in
Salisbury while working with their international mentor teachers
in New Zealand.
HOST INSTITUTION:
New Zealand teaching interns
are placed with the cooperation of Salisbury University’s long
time partners, Junior Class Learning (JCL) New Zealand. In
addition to placing interns in classrooms with master teachers
in the Auckland Public Schools, JCL also arranges home stays for
the interns with local Auckland families.
HOUSING:
During their stay in Auckland,
students live with a New Zealand family experiencing the
hospitality of the South Pacific first hand. The host families
have been screened and approved by JCL New Zealand. In
addition to providing housing, host families provide board and
transportation to the internship schools throughout the
experience. Living with a family in Auckland has been central
to the International Teaching Internship success. Many students
keep in touch with their host families throughout the years, and
some manage to return to visit.
