The Salisbury Abroad: Pune, India program offers students the opportunity to experience living in one of the most diverse and vibrant countries in the world. India is steeped in history, while at the same time emerging to become one of the most powerful countries of the 21st century. India is the largest democracy and set to take a leading role in the world both politically and economically. SU students will spend a semester at S.P. College in the city of Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. They will pay roughly the same amount in tuition, fees, room and board as they would at SU. The only significant extra cost will be the airfare to India. CLASSES: All students take two courses of Hindi language/Indian culture as well as one course on Indian History/Politics. In addition students take one course in Indian Philosophy/Religion during the Spring semester or a course on Indian Art/Music/Architecture during the Fall semester for a total of 16 SU credits. Students earn SU credits and GPA. These are not transfer credits. All courses, except for the Hindi language courses, are taught in English. List of courses: Each semester: MDFL 101: Elementary Hindi I MDFL 102: Elementary Hindi II POSC 390: International Field Studies: Indian Politics and History Spring semester only: PHIL 399: International Studies in Philosophy: Indian Philosophy and Religion Fall Semester only: MDFL 248: Studies in Contemporary Cultures: Indian Art, Music and Architecture All of the courses on the Salisbury Abroad: India program can be applied to the interdisciplinary minor in South Asian Studies. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in programs of the National Service Scheme (NSS) of India through S. P. College. The NSS was created by the Indian government in 1969, the centenary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, and is inspired by the Gandhian idea that students should volunteer to work in the rural communities of India. Work performed by NSS volunteers includes, for example, re-forestation, water conservation, assistance with health-care or teaching literacy classes CITY OF PUNE: Pune is a vibrant city of about 6 million people. It is home to several internationally renowned institutions of higher education and is often referred to as “the Oxford of the East.” The city is the cultural center of the state of Maharashtra, situated on the Deccan Plateau about 150 miles southeast of Mumbai. Pune is easily navigable by auto-rickshaws which form the taxi service of the city. In addition to many institutions of learning, Pune features a bustling city center with various historic buildings, such as temples and a medieval fortress. The city provides abundant cultural offerings, including classical Indian music festivals, theater, cinema and sports. Pune has a number of world-class hospitals and other medical facilities. SIR PARASHURAMBHAU COLLEGE (S.P. COLLEGE): S.P. College is a predominantly undergraduate college of around 7,000 students, affiliated with the University of Pune. It was founded and is still governed by the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali, an educational trust established in 1888. Its aim is to promote elementary, secondary and tertiary education, particularly to students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. S.P. College is among the top 10% of colleges in all of India (as ranked by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India) and is open to high-performing students from all backgrounds. It provides education in a wide variety of subjects from the humanities, sciences and business. The modern campus, which features a number of historic buildings, is located in the heart of the city of Pune. It houses a library with internet access, dorms and sports facilities, including a swimming pool. You can see photos of the campus and learn more about S.P. College on their website. HOUSING: During their stay, SU students will live on campus in S.P. College dorms. This allows for many opportunities for interaction with S. P. College students. The dorms are double-occupancy and will be more basic than SU dorms but they provide students with everything they need, including communal TV and game facilities. MARYLAND SISTER STATES PROGRAM: The state of Maryland and the state of Maharashtra, India have recently embarked on a relationship as Sister States. This Sister State relationship is managed by the Office of the Maryland Secretary of State. SU is proud to play a small role in the cultural, educational, civic, and commercial exchange that the Sister State Program seeks to cultivate. For more information on the Maryland Sister States Program, see the Program website. TRAVEL: Students will fly into Mumbai before continuing to Pune by bus (about 4 hours). From Pune it is possible to travel within the state of Maharashtra and beyond by train, bus or plane. Trains to Mumbai leave frequently and the journey takes 3-4 hours. Pune has frequent bus services to the city of Aurangabad (about 6 hours) which serves as the gateway for visits to the world-famous cave temples at Ajanta and Ellora. COST: The cost for the Salisbury Abroad: Pune, India program is $7,800. This includes all tuition and fees at Salisbury University and S.P. College as well as housing in double-occupancy dorms and board. Costs not included are international airfare, immunizations, optional program travel, visa and passport fees, books, and spending money. This cost is comparable to that paid by an in-state student paying for one semester of tuition and fees, on-campus housing and full board at the SU main campus in Salisbury. Admission is competitive and enrollment is limited. Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full. Once the program is full, accepted students will be placed on a waiting list. The application deadline is March 15 for the Fall semester and October 15 for Spring semester.
