The Teach for the World program provides opportunities for SU alumni to have an international work experience with trusted SU partners around the world. The Teach for the World – English programs are open to alumni of any university degree. All of the Teach for the World programs are designed to provide SU alumni with an opportunity to spend a full year teaching abroad and making enough money to cover the costs of the year. SU students/alumni are invited to apply for one of the coveted teaching slots set aside just for them at Anqing Normal University (ANU) in Anqing, Anhui Province, China. All undergraduate college students at ANU must complete a minimum of four semesters of English as a foreign language as part of the general education curriculum. Teach for the World – English teachers are a part of the English department at ANU and teach lower level general education courses in English language to freshmen and sophomore students. Teachers are supervised by full-time faculty members in the Department of English. Outside the classroom they participate with the English Circle club, play intermural sports, and generally enrich the ANU learning community by sharing their American culture and English language with ANU students and faculty. This site is ideal for SU alumni who want to learn more about China. Teachers will learn about traditional China and modern global China, while improving their Chinese language skills. Requirements All CEDEI English teachers must possess a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate, hold a university degree in any field, and be a native or fluent English speaker. Current SU students can complete 2 courses in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) and an English language partner experience in the SU English Language Institute to satisfy the TEFL certificate requirement. Alumni who have already graduated can complete the courses and practicum part-time before embarking on their year in South America. Any two of the following courses can satisfy the TEFL certificate when added to the English language partner experience in the SU English Language Institute: ENGL 532: Literacy and ESOL Reading ENGL 533: ESOL Program Development ENGL 534: Literacy and ESOL Writing ENGL 535: Language and Culture ENGL 536: Principles of Linguistics ENGL 537: Modern English Grammar ENGL 538: Bilingualism ENGL 539: English Language Acquisition ENGL 547: Current Issues in ESOL Instruction Students/alumni who wish to register for the English language partner program with the SU English Language Institute should contact the SU Center for International Education for more details. Finally, the Chinese government requires all foreign teachers of English to complete a one week orientation program prior to beginning work in China. The orientation is held in one of several cities across China. It costs approximately $500 US including accommodations and cultural events. Compensation Teach for the World – English teachers in Anqing are eligible for a series of benefits from their hosts at ANU. Benefits include: reimbursement for international airfare, free housing, monthly teaching stipend, and additional travel stipend for exploratory travel within China. At the end of the year, you may not have saved much money, but you will have a year of memories, lots of new Chinese friends, and an exciting new component to your resume. Accommodations Teach for the World participants are provided with free housing on the old campus in downtown Anqing city. SU has partnered with ANU to furnish and decorate the Teach for the World apartments just for SU alumni, complete with SU pennants on the wall and SU blankets on the bed. Free faculty shuttle buses run throughout the day to transport faculty from housing on old campus to classes on the new campus. The housing on the old campus is within walking distance of all that downtown Anqing has to offer including the parks, Huangmei opera, bars and restaurants, and even the Yangtze river. Part-Time MA TESOL Option Teach for the World – English teachers are encouraged to continue their professional development during their year in China by enrolling as part-time students in the SU MA-TESOL program. Teachers can complete up to nine graduate credits in the MA-TESOL program prior to applying and being admitted to the MA-TESOL program. Teachers can complete these courses online with faculty members at SU while teaching English full-time in China. |
